Breast cancer patients 'stop drugs' due to side-effects

About a third of breast cancer patients stop taking medication because side-effects are more severe than they expect, US researchers suggest.
The Northwestern University team questioned 686 women who were taking aromatase inhibitors as treatment for oestrogen-sensitive breast cancer.
It found 36% stopped their medication because of symptoms such as joint pain, hot flushes, weight gain and nausea.
A UK charity said it was aware some women stopped their treatment early.
Aromatase inhibitors are given to postmenopausal breast cancer patients to reduce the level of oestrogen in those whose tumours were fuelled by the hormone.
About two-thirds of breast cancers are oestrogen-sensitive, and aromatase inhibitors have been shown to reduce the risk of cancer recurring.

Obama Says Fixing US Economy Will Take Time

U.S. President Barack Obama says fixing the American economy could take years, calling it "a long term process."

In a television interview to be broadcast on Sunday, Obama said the structural problems in the economy have been building for two decades and that repairing them would take more than one term in office and "probably take more than one president."

He described himself as "the captain of a ship going through really bad storms." Excerpts of the interview were released by the network before its airing.

The U.S. economy has recently showed signs of improvement with the unemployment rate dropping from nine percent to 8.6 percent but it remains far above a normal traditional rate of four or five percent. The jobless rate is seen as a major factor in whether Mr. Obama can win re-election to another four-year term next November.

The president once again called on Congress to approve his nominee, Richard Cordray, to head a new consumer protection agency. In the interview he repeated comments made Saturday during his weekly address that Americans need an advocate against "dishonest businesses" and their "unscrupulous practices."

Smoker's cough could be serious

Smokers often fail to take a chronic cough and shortness of breath seriously enough, noted Dieter Koehler, academic advisory council member of the German Society for Pneumology and Respiratory Medicine.
They dismiss the symptoms as a harmless smoker's cough or blame them on poor physical fitness or advancing age.
Koehler said that a chronic cough with or without sputum, and shortness of breath during mild physical exertion or when resting, were signs of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
The disease often goes undiagnosed until lung function has fallen by half, he pointed out.
People wanting to know whether they might have COPD can take an assessment test online.
Not only smokers are at risk of developing COPD, but also people with long exposure to other lung irritants such as chemical fumes, air pollution or dust, or who have certain genetic defects.
Koehler advises those with telltale symptoms to see a doctor as soon as possible.

US should admit violating Iran’s airspace

US should be accountable toward violation of Iran's airspace, the UN official spokesman Martin Nesirky said on Friday.

He made the remarks in an exclusive interview with IRNA correspondent in New York.

'UN will investigate Iran's complaint on the violation of its airspace by a US spy drone,' the official added.

Islamic Republic of Iran in a letter to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, UN General Assembly and UN Security Council called for condemning the violation of Iran's airspace by the US spy drone while strongly criticizing the US government.

Islamic Republic of Iran's Permanent Representative to UN Mohammad Khazaei in his letter to the heads of UN’s main bodies wrote that in continuation of US hostile moves against the Islamic Republic of Iran, a US RQ170 drone violated Iran’s airspace by penetrating 250 kilometers into the Iranian soil in northern Tabas region that faced timely and strong reaction of the Iranian armed forces.

“My government emphasizes the obvious and provocative violation of the US government is a hostile move and in evident contradiction to international law, particularly the basic principles of the UN charter,” Ambassador Khazaei wrote in his letter while mentioning Islamic Republic of Iran's previous letters to US government in this regard.

Iran displayed an aircraft Thursday that it said was a US spy drone downed last week by an 'electronic ambush,' a feat that prompted boasts of Iranian technological prowess in the face of increased hostility from the West.

Iranian television used its main newscast to unveil the drone, identified as RQ-170 Sentinel made by Lockheed Martin. The drone was shown in a video at an undisclosed location where two men in military fatigues could be seen walking around it. The belly of the plane was covered with banners saying, 'We'll trample America underfoot' and 'the US cannot do a damn thing.'
